Originating from neighboring Tucson, the Sonoran Hot Dog has become a staple in Arizona. It’s a mouthwatering blend of Mexican and American flavors, featuring a bacon-wrapped hot dog nestled in a fluffy bolillo bun, topped with creamy, spicy, and tangy ingredients. You'll find some of the best Sonoran Hot Dogs at popular Scottsdale spots like El Caprichoso, Nogales Hot Dogs, and Simon’s Hot Dogs.

Make Your Own Sonoran Hot Dogs at Home

This February, let’s explore one of Scottsdale’s most beloved dishes—Sonoran Hot Dogs—and how you can prepare them at home!

Want to bring Scottsdale’s flavors to your kitchen? Here’s an easy recipe to try!

Ingredients:

  • 4 beef hot dogs
  • 4 slices of bacon
  • 4 bolillo rolls or soft hot dog buns
  • ½ cup pinto beans (cooked and mashed)
  • ½ cup diced tomatoes
  • ¼ cup diced onions
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño, diced (optional for spice)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Mexican blend)
  • 1 avocado, sliced (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Wrap & Cook the Hot Dogs – Tightly wrap each hot dog with a strip of bacon. Cook on a grill or in a skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally until the bacon is crispy and the hot dog is cooked through (about 7-10 minutes).
  2. Toast the Buns – Lightly toast the bolillo rolls on the grill or in the oven for added crunch.
  3. Assemble the Hot Dogs – Spread a layer of mashed pinto beans inside each bun. Place the bacon-wrapped hot dog inside.
  4. Add the Toppings – Sprinkle diced tomatoes, onions, and jalapeños over the hot dog. Drizzle with mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup. Top with shredded cheese and avocado slices.
  5. Serve & Enjoy – Serve with a side of grilled peppers or crispy fries for the full Sonoran experience!

Why This Dish Represents Scottsdale’s Food Scene
